Tell us about yourself (interests, work, anything interesting, etc.)
I am now retired, living locally in Hobsonville. I enjoy flying model helicopters; I used to make them. I also enjoy gardening - I've just recently bought a wall-hanging garden which I plan to plant strawberries, lettuce and garlic chives. Before I retired, I was an aircraft ground handler, first starting out with National Airways in Whenuapai, which was the main airfield before the Auckland Airport we know today was established in Māngere.
Tell us about your hearing loss and when you first noticed it.
It was my wife who first noticed my hearing problems - it would have been around 20 years ago. I probably did have a hearing loss much earlier than I first realised, but I didn't know because it was so gradual. We never wore hearing protection, so I was exposed to lots of aircraft noise throughout my working life, which had a huge impact on my hearing.
Prior to getting your new hearing aids, how did your hearing loss impact your life?
I've been long-time hearing aid wearer and have worn hearing aids from other clinics. My old hearing aids were not very suitable for me; I struggled to clean and maintain them and the small rubber domes were uncomfortable in my ears. My wife was constantly having to repeat what had been said. I struggled to hear the TV, and I would have to take my hearing aids out to hear more clearly over the phone.
At what point did you realise you needed to do something about your hearing?
My wife was very encouraging to act on my hearing from the start. I was approved for funding through ACC due to my history of noise exposure through my work. I was fit with hearing aids for the first time over 12 years ago; technology has come a long way since then!
Did you do any research about hearing solutions before coming to Hobsonville Hearing?
Not really. I first came to Hobsonville Hearing to have my ears cleaned, and began visiting for hearing aid servicing. When I became eligible for new ACC funding, I decided to upgrade to new rechargeable hearing aids with Hobsonville Hearing.
Tell us about your hearing aid journey and how it has impacted your day-to-day life.
I just can't believe the difference! In comparison to my previous hearing aids, I don't even feel like I have anything in my ears. It has been so easy to stick them on the charger at night and they are much easier to take care of.
What advice would you give to people seeking treatment for hearing loss?
Come to Hobsonville Hearing! In all seriousness, if you know you have a problem with your hearing, go to your local audiologist, don't just hope for the best. Your hearing loss can be so gradual, not just an overnight change, so you should act sooner rather than later.
