Tell us about yourself (interest, work, anything interesting, etc.)
I have been a midwife and currently working as a nurse part-time at both North Shore and Waitakere Hospitals. I lead a busy life with working, playing golf, walking the dog, minding grandchildren and travelling. I have just bought a new campervan and plan to visit Aotearoa with my husband and dog which I am very excited about.
Tell us about your hearing loss and when you first noticed it
I guess I really noticed a few years ago that my hearing was getting worse and finding difficulty at work and at social events. My family also noticed how loud the TV was now!
Prior to getting a hearing aid, how did your hearing loss impact your life?
In my job, it is really important to be able to communicate well and I was getting frustrated because I was always having to ask "Can you repeat that?" or "Sorry, I didn't hear you."
At what point did you realise you needed to do something about your hearing?
As I noticed [my hearing difficulties] more and more and others were commenting, I decided it was time to take action. I struggled to keep up with conversations at work to the point I often couldn't hear patients. The one defining moment was when I missed hearing an important emergency call!
Did you do any research about hearing solutions before coming to Hobsonville Hearing?
I had my hearing tested a few years ago and it was only a very mild hearing loss. My decision to go to Hobsonville Hearing was to support local and Abby offered an initial free hearing screening for SuperGold Card holders, so I jumped at the chance. My granddaughter, Phoebe [our receptionist], also really encouraged me to come in (for many months might we add!)
Tell us about your hearing aid journey and how it has impacted your day-to-day life
Once I learned that I indeed did have a hearing loss, I had a full hearing test with Abby and she went through all the options available which included needing hearing aids. Abby made the whole process so easy from start to finish - she has been amazing to deal with and I can't recommend her enough.
I've had my hearing aids for a month now and immediately noticed how much clearer everything was. On my second day wearing them, I went outside and suddenly I could hear sounds like never before - including parachutes opening above me and my neighbour's water fountain! My work and social life have changed and I feel I'm not missing out anymore which gives me more confidence. Finally, it's been an investment in my health.
What advice would you give to people seeking treatment for hearing loss?
My advice would be don't put it off. I didn't realise how much my hearing loss was really impacting my life until I started wearing hearing aids. It is worth so much to your ongoing health and well-being. Also, wear them [all day] every day to get the full impact - you really don't even know they are there most of the time.
