Quaggas News

Dear Quaggas Members,

Winter has arrived - with snow on the mountains around Worcester, some extreme weather events and days of rain!

The club has come a long way and continues to grow and expand. The club boasts many new and diverse members. Likewise, the environment in which the club operates, as well as the lifestyles and needs of the members has changed substantially. In this light, the committee feels that a review of the constitution and rules will be of benefit to all. To this end, the Committee wish to engage with members in an open forum regarding the rules and regulations of the club prior to the AGM later this year. The Committee will provide an update on key issues but the focus will be on members input to address current issues, both internally and externally to ensure the success of the club. Please book Saturday 15th of July 2023 at 11:00 in your diaries for this important members meeting and join us for drinks afterwards. We relish the opportunity to engage with and hear from you.

The Committee approved an 8% increase on annual levies at the last committee meeting. The annual levies will be invoiced on 1 July for all home owners and permanent campsite owners. Please note that the levy is now subject to VAT since the club VAT registration was issued by SARS on 26 January 2023.

Great News!
The Quaggas Fitness Festival 2023 is confirmed for Sunday 8 October 2023. Please diarise this weekend and join in the fun. The organisers, Dragonfly Tri are already hard at work with the arrangements and plans to go bigger and better each year. Some fantastic prizes have already been confirmed. Watch this space...

Stay warm and hope to see you all at the 'Christmas in July' dinner. See below for the delicious menu to be served by Mahdie's, well know caterers from Worcester. Booking is essential for this sit-down dinner, in true Christmas style. The starter and dessert will be served plated and if you wish to be seated with friends please inform Cherie. Parents with children must please contact Cherie to arrange for presents under the Christmas tree.

Kind Regards

Tobie

Kwaggaskloof and Brandvlei Dams

The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) completed their project to increase the height of the canal feeding the Brandvlei Dam. The height was increased by 300mm which will result in increased waterflow directed to our dams.

Please note that the highwater mark may be higher this year compared to previous years depending on the rainfall. The Kwaggaskloof Dam level is currently 6% more compared to the same time last year.

Water Meters

The DWS is currently in the process of auditing the extraction volumes of water users around the dam. The registered water quota for Quaggas is:

Members please be advised that the current Quaggas usage FAR EXCEEDS THIS LIMIT and we are in the process of negotiating with DWS, The Central Breede River Water User Association and the Breede-Gouritz Catchment Management Agency (BGCMA) to adjust this quota.

The above said, the committee and management wish to be pro-active in managing the water extraction volume but that requires more detailed information about each delivery point. The installation of individual water meters was therefore approved to enable the recording of water volumes at each water connection. We request that all members greatly reduce their water usage.

Refuse Collection

Please note that during the winter months the refuse collection is done early morning only on a Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Please do not leave loose bags outside where hadida birds can reach as they make a real mess of the refuse bags. Also inform your staff not to leave bags outside late afternoon unless you provide a wheelie bin or dustbin for this purpose.

The refuse bin must be located where easily accessible for the club staff.

Please note the following

  1. Management requests that members and contractors stop the dumping of materials on the Water Affairs property outside the Quaggas entrance gate. Garden and building refuse must be delivered to the municipal dump on the R43 on the way to Worcester.

  2. Members must also inform their garden services and gardeners not to dump grass cuttings and other garden refuse in the veld outside their properties.
  3. Members must please reduce their water consumption and set sprayers accordingly for the winter months.
  4. Members are not allowed to let contractors in through the members gate. Contractors must be scanned in by the gate personnel. Note that contractors are not allowed into Quaggas over weekends.
  5. Quaggas financials, meeting minutes and other important information is available on the website in the member’s section.
  6. The Quaggas 9.9-year lease renewal, due in 2025 is currently in the final stages of being confirmed with DWS.
  7. Due to the lease renewal and procedural changes at DWS, all new building plan submissions are on hold. DWS is in the process of centralising their approval procedure in their Pretoria office. Members must please refrain from contacting DWS Worcester directly until we have clarity on this matter.
  8. The club submitted an application to DWS to extend the liquor license onto the lawns outside the club building. Currently liquor is only allowed to be served inside of the clubhouse building.
  9. The committee is reviewing quotes for the road repair leading up to the club entrance and replacement of the digger.
