Our August Spotlight Patient

Deanne Roberts

Tell us about yourself (interest, work, anything interesting, etc.)

My family came from England when I was 16, in 1959. After 6-months at school, I commenced nursing training in New Plymouth. My nursing career mainly involved cardiac training, especially for children. I worked in England, the USA, and Vietnam (during the war with the New Zealand Surgical Team). I then worked with the Save the Children's fund, [what was back then the] Crippled Children Society, ending my career working for Plunket Line in Auckland. It has been interesting and fulfilling.

I am now retired and living at Summerset at Monterey Park Retirement Village in Hobsonville. My first husband died from cancer when our daughter was 9 - she is now a mother of four! My present husband and I have been married for 21 years. We have settled happily into the village.

Tell us about your hearing loss and when you first noticed it.

I first noticed that I had a hearing problem a few years back. It was particularly challenging to understand conversations in a crowded room.  I had to increase the volume of the TV and the radio. I needed to ask friends and family to repeat themselves.

Prior to getting hearing aids, how did your hearing loss impact your life and at what point did you realise you needed to do something about your hearing?

I began to not understand the conversation and became embarrassed of having to ask everyone to repeat what they had said; I knew I was missing out. A friend had suggested I go for a hearing test. I remember thinking, "Oh no, do I really need [hearing aids]?" I went for a test and long story short, ended up with hearing aids.

Did you do any research about hearing solutions before coming to Hobsonville Hearing?

I never realised there were independent audiology practices (how could I not know?) I had an appointment at a well-known hearing clinic - on a friend's advice - not really having done any of my own research.

Before I came to Hobsonville Hearing, I really didn't like my hearing aids and wasn't given much advice on how to use them. Everyone was pleasant, but my appointments were short and I left feeling I had not learned much about my hearing. I never felt they worked correctly.

Always make sure you have insurance!

Tell us about your hearing aid journey and how it has impacted your day-to-day life.

I became lazy with my hearing aids and during COVID, I lost them twice (make sure you have insurance!) One night, I lost them after they were knocked out of my ears when putting my coat on when leaving a restaurant. We drove home and realised I didn't have them. In the morning, we returned and retraced my steps - we found the hearing aids, but both of them had been run over by a vehicle.

Fortunately, I did have insurance and I was able to replace them. Then, I lost one of them again, which required another insurance replacement.

I had talked with friends in the village, who recommended Hobsonville Hearing. That's when I came to Abby; boy, what a difference! She was so thorough and explained the workings of hearing aids so well. She gave me advice on how to look after them, especially cleaning and keeping them safe (always carry the little hearing container!)

Wow - how my life has changed since having hearing aids. I hear so much better and don't become stressed over not hearing.

Wow - how my life has changed since having hearing aids. I hear so much better and don't become stressed over not hearing. I love that phone calls, radio, podcasts and music can stream to my hearing aids. There is even a phone app to help you where necessary. Abby and Phoebe are always available to talk; nothing is too much trouble. I wish them well in their new venture - so exciting for Abby.

What advice would you give to people seeking treatment for hearing loss?

So, with the experience I have had: If you think you might be having an issue with your hearing, do something about it! Talk to other people about their experience and do a thorough research. As you mature, it is better to have an audiologist close to your living area if possible. Regular maintenance, cleaning and understanding of your hearing aids are crucial to ensure you get the most out of your investment.

Deanne looking fabulous with her adorable grandies

Thank you so much for sharing your story, Deanne, it has been a pleasure getting to know you!

What have we been up to?

As some of you may know, Phoebe is a big Warriors fan. She attended the recent game against the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles at Mt Smart Stadium. It was such an incredible atmosphere, over 26,000 people all cheering for our team. The Warriors are sitting comfortably in 3rd place on the NRL ladder after another fabulous win against the St George Dragons.

Abby attended the annual New Zealand Audiological Society (NZAS) Conference. This year,  the conference was held in Auckland and joined with the 32nd World Congress of the International Association of Communication Sciences (IALP). Conferences are always a great time hearing and learning about new advances in research, efforts to improve equity and catching up with industry colleagues.

The event also includes the NZAS Annual General Meeting, where the new executive council members were elected. Abby was re-elected as an Audiologist Representative on the NZAS council, where she will work alongside other NZAS council members to discuss important topics related to audiology practice in New Zealand.

An Update on our New Space

It's all coming together now! We decided to go with our ocean blue and iconic blush pink brand colours as feature painted walls (and for our front door!) They look amazing throughout the new space.

We are also in the midst of having our flooring installed. Abby opted for a light, bright herringbone-pattern vinyl - it looks stunning against our feature walls!

We are counting down the days until we get to move in and welcome you all into the new clinic. We are crossing our fingers for a mid-September opening date - we will keep you posted!

As always, we are here to help you with all of your ear-related needs:

Or visit our clinic during our opening hours: Monday - Friday, 8:30am - 5pm.
